FAQ2.jpg

Who runs ALIR?
ALIR is overseen by a governing council of 11 members elected annually by the membership. Anyone who has been a member for a year or more is eligible to run for council.

How is ALIR related to NEISD?
ALIR is a non-profit organization (501C3).  We are autonomous but we operate on the property of and under the sponsorship of NEISD. We are part of their community education program but the responsibility for the day-to-day operations of ALIR resides with the governing council.

Is ALIR strictly an educational organization?
No, in addition to presenting classes, a primary objective of ALIR is to give members opportunities for social interaction and community engagement through charitable projects. There is an art show at the end of every semester for students to show their work as well as performances by the ukulele and dance classes.

What is the cost to become a member?
Membership is obtained when you pay for and attend classes. At present, membership is $85.00 per semester in Spring and Fall. $75 of this amount goes to NEISD and $10 goes to ALIR. The Summer semester is $45.

How are the semesters organized?
The full semesters are 12 weeks in the Spring and Fall and 9 weeks in Summer. Some classes are offered in abbreviated sessions of 3 and 6 weeks.

Is there a limit on the number of courses I can take?
No, there is one fee. It covers as many classes as you want to take, whether on campus or online.

If I have to drop out after classes begin, can I get a refund?
Usually not. If dropping out is based on circumstances beyond your control an exception may be made at the discretion of the governing council.

If my spouse or significant other is under 50, can he or she join me?
Yes, they can register, pay and attend classes also.

What if I want to take an online class but don’t know how to use Zoom?
Before each semester instruction on the use of Zoom is provided.

Can I become an instructor?
Absolutely! ALIRians who want to teach a class should contact Kelleigh Lewis, Curriculum Coordinator, karensyl53@gmail.com.

If I want to join ALIR but can’t afford the fee, is assistance available?
There is a fund that can help cover this situation, but the decision is made by the governing council.

Can I bring a guest to a class I’m taking?
Yes, but this should not be used to allow someone to take a course without becoming a member. Attendance at one or two classes is acceptable.
